It’s time again for the monthly Recipe Redux post. This month focuses on your gut health. Below is the prompt we were given:
Good Gut Health – With cold and flu season upon us, the best defense may be good gut health. Since much of our immune health begins in the gut, show us your healthy, delicious recipe to bolster gut health.
Having good gut health is important all year around and there are many things that can disrupt your healthy gut biome. Antibiotics are notorious for this so I urge you to keep yourself healthy, and get your gut in check to help prevent the need for antibiotics.
If you need them you need them. There is no doubt that they can be very useful. As a doctor though, I URGE you to not ask for antibiotics, or request them, or worse demand them if your provider does not think they are needed. Antibiotic overuse and misuse does a lot of harm, not only to you, but also to others since it increases the “bug’s” resistance and we are already seeing “super bugs” that cannot be cured by any of our antibiotics and are deadly. I have a lot to say on this topic, however this post is about your gut health, not about the antibiotic problem! LOL.
So, to get away from that tangent, when I first read this post, I thought immediately about probiotics. These babies are great for helping, protecting and healing your gut. There are many foods that are naturally rich in probiotics. These include some of the following:
- Kefir
- Saurkraut
- Yogurt (plain is the best)
- Kimchi
- Kombucha
- Miso
- Tempeh
- Certain cheeses
This is not an extensive list, but is a good start. So, this recipe includes greek yogurt as my probiotic to help your gut, keep on track, satisfy your sweet tooth and more! If you can tolerate dairy, greek yogurt (make it plain for maximum benefits and look for live cultures on the label) is a great source.
I have a few other protein greek yogurts that might pique your interest as well. Just click on the pictures to be taken to the link!
